We are saddened to learn of the death of Basil McNamee.
For over thirty years Basil was a cardiologist at the South Tyrone Hospital; he was also a very distinguished sportsman.
He player cricket for Donemana whilst a pupil of Foyle College. When at Queen’s he played in the side that won the Senior League in 1959. In 1969 he captained the North of Ireland team that won the Senior Cup. When Basil moved to the South Tyrone he played for Dungannon for twenty-five years. .
Basil was honoured to be President of the Northern Cricket Union and in 2010-11 Cricket Ireland, the year that Ireland defeated England in that memorable one day international.
Basil also played senior rugby for Queen’s and CIYMS and represented Ulster.
Basil was greatly respected in the local community and was a valued and useful member of the rugby club.
We extend our sympathies to his sons Peter, Andrew, Michael and the wider family circle.
