Dungannon Royal School suffered a shock defeat in Portadown on Saturday morning when the home team grabbed a converted try deep in added time. RSD had been aiming for a bonus point win and while they did score 4 tries it was Portadown College who grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat.
Early runs by Jack Girvan and Logan McIlravie looked promising before the home fullback intercepted and ran in for a try. Following 2 unsuccessful visits to the line RSD had a point to prove and they responded well with Jack Girvan scoring a notable solo effort. The score sat at 5-5 but Portadown scored again to make it 12-5. In injury time fullback, Jonny McCammon scored to make it 12-10 at the break. Four minutes into the second half RSD took a first time lead, 12-15 when Charlie Conroy raced in at the right hand corner. Then midway through the half the industrious Jack Girvan burst through to score at the posts. He added the conversion to give RSD a commanding 10 point lead. However, 10 minutes from time Portadown College closed the gap with a try despite a suspicion of obstruction. Heartened by several penalty awards the home side rallied and then came the try that broke Dungannon hearts. That completed the round robin series and now RSD must wait to see what level of the Schools Cup they will enter.
