Match Report

Dungannon enjoyed breeze advantage in the opening half and duly moved 17-7 ahead at the break. However, Omagh made better use of the wind in the second half scoring 23 unanswered points for a deserved 30-17 win. Dungannon will certainly rue coughing up so much possession in the second half. Overall, it was a very entertaining encounter with both sides displaying less than the usual quantity of early season ‘rust’. Both teams were a short a few regulars for this early season opener. With the pitch at Mellon Park in pristine condition the scene was set for a running spectacle. Omagh started on top but Dungannon settled quickly for Adam Evans to fire over a penalty on the third minute. The hosts retaliated with good possession and just missed out on a leveller when Scott Elliott struck the upright with a penalty on 8 minutes. Back came Gannon and a superb break by Jonny Toal almost paid dividends. Omagh then countered with Eoin Murnaghan and Ryan Mitchell combining well for the latter to score half way out. Elliott converted to make it 7-3 on 15 minutes. However, Dungannon hit back to regain the lead midway through the half. Peter Doran took a great lineout ball for a drive that ended with Daniel Maxwell getting the touch down. Evans added the extras to make it 7-10. The Dungannon offensive continued and when Evans broke to the left the ball was recycled to the right for Toal to complete the move with a try at the posts. Again, Evans converted. Good work by the Omagh forwards took play into the visitors 22. Alas for the hosts, when released out wide the ball spun into touch. Dungannon had their moments too and despite good breaks by Toal and Connor McGeough the half ended 7-17. Omagh started the second half with intent and despite a timely tackle by the Dungannon fullback, Andrew McGregor, Elliott cut through for a try that he converted himself on 42 minutes. With the gap now cut down to 3 points Omagh began to take control. They did suffer a setback though when a prop was binned on 47 minutes. Dungannon’s sortie in the corner was halted when the hosts were awarded a penalty. On 55 minutes Elliott landed a penalty that brought the sides level at 17-17. Then midway through the half and still with 14 men Omagh moved ahead when flanker, James Catterson touching down to give Omagh the lead. The issue was sealed when Elliott landed a penalty on 65 minutes that gave the hosts a crucial 8 point lead. A couple of lost lineouts helped Omagh stay on top and they were duly awarded a bonus point when winger, Matthew Eccles crashed over deep in injury time.
