Match Report

Dungannon Thirds produced a storming finish to see off Belfast side Cooke at Stevenson Park. The hosts started on top with skipper Stephen Donaghy leading by example. However, despite pressure no scores were recorded and when Cooke broke from defence Ross Jarrett raced away to give the visitors a 5 point advantage in as many minutes. Dungannon bounced back and promising scrum-half, Jack Weir, son of the legendary Richard, pounced to score at the posts. Matthew Rodgers converted and Dungannon led 7-5. The hosts kept the momentum going with Lorcan McGrath finishing off a Carl Bell break on 20 minutes. Going into the second quarter another Weir break paved the way for the strong running Blaine Stewart to score at the posts with Rodgers adding the extras to make it 19-5. On the half hour Jarrett struck again to put Cooke back in the game and the half ended 19-10
Neither side managed points in the third quarter and then came that storming finish from the hosts. Three converted tries per Johnny O’Neill, Richard Lavery and Eamon McElduff put Dungannon 40-10 clear. O’Neill then sealed a deserved bonus point win when he broke clear to complete his brace. Team manager. Jonny Wright was delighted with the finish.
